The camels obeyed us, but each hard step

jarred their baggy, sand-folding feet,

baffled their slow, desert-loving sway,

galled their haughty eastern pride.

And truth to tell, it was a mad-fool journey

chasing a star across unfriendly frontiers,

sleeping by day, riding by night,

lost in wonder at the heavens’ design

that showed our going by the constellations,

mapped our passage by the zodiac.
